Essential October Tax Deadlines for Businesses

As October arrives, so do the crisp autumn days along with crucial business tax deadlines every enterprise must heed. From corporate tax filings to retirement contributions, marking these dates can save you from costly penalties and ensure seamless compliance.

October 15 - Corporation Tax Filings

If your corporation operates on a calendar year, it’s time to file your 2024 income tax return using Form 1120. This deadline applies if you secured an automatic 6-month extension by April 15. Make sure to settle any outstanding taxes, interests, or penalties by this date.Image 1

October 15 - Payroll Deposit Deadlines

For employers, October 15 is critical for making deposits of Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income tax for September 2025 if monthly deposit rules apply. This also stands as the deadline for nonpayroll withholding deposits for the same period.

October 15 – Establishment of Keogh Accounts

For self-employed taxpayers who filed for a 6-month tax return extension, October 15, 2025, is the last opportunity to set up a Keogh Retirement Account aimed at 2024 contributions.

Last Call for SEP IRA & Keogh Plan Contributions

If your tax return is extended to October 15, this is your final chance to contribute to SEP or Keogh retirement plans for the calendar year 2024.Image 3

October 31 - Quarterly Tax Submissions

The end of October marks the deadline for filing Form 941 for the third quarter of 2025. Pay any due tax under accuracy of deposit rules unless your liability is less than $2,500, in which case a complete payment with your return is permissible. Timely deposits allow filing extension until November 10.

Federal Unemployment Tax
Pay the third quarter’s FUTA tax for amounts exceeding $500 by October 31.

Adjustments for Weekends & Holidays: If any due date coincides with a weekend or legal holiday, filing dates automatically extend to the next business day.
