Act Now: Key Energy Tax Credits Are Ending Soon

In an era marked by heightened awareness of climate change, the federal government has taken steps to incentivize sustainable energy solutions through various tax credits. From installing solar panels and upgrading to energy-efficient systems to purchasing electric vehicles, these initiatives have been financially supported for years. However, the recently enacted "One Big Beautiful Bill" Act has redefined the timeline for these credits, urging consumers to act swiftly to capitalize on these opportunities.

Solar Energy Credits Revamped - The Residential Clean Energy Credit has encouraged homeowners to invest in solar installations. Previously, this credit allowed for a significant deduction—30% of installation costs—from federal taxes for qualified solar electric, solar water heating, geothermal heat pumps, and wind energy systems.

Originally slated to benefit consumers until December 31, 2032, the new bill accelerates the expiration to December 31, 2025. Homeowners must prioritize getting their systems installed and inspected before this deadline to realize the benefits of the credit.

Energy Efficiency Home Improvements Credit - Under the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, taxpayers improving their residences with energy efficiency enhancements could claim 30%, up to $1,200 annually, for costs associated with high-efficiency HVAC systems, upgraded insulation, energy-efficient doors, windows, and skylights.

Like the solar credit, the expiration date for this was also changed to December 31, 2025. Homeowners should not delay, as these improvements often require local building inspector approvals, necessitating prompt action.

Electric Vehicles (EV) Tax Credits

  1. The Updated EV Credit: The Clean Vehicle Credit has provided up to $7,500 for each new EV that meets battery and mineral component standards, encouraging sustainable vehicle technologies.

With a price cap—$80,000 for vans, pickups, SUVs, and $55,000 for other vehicles—the vehicles must be assembled in the U.S. The recent act has fast-tracked the expiration of this credit to post-September 30, 2025, challenging consumers to expedite their purchasing decisions.

  2. Pre-Owned EV Credit: Previously this credit provided the lesser of $4,000 or 30% of the sale price for used electric vehicles. However, it is set to expire by September 30, 2025.

With sales price limitations and income caps for eligibility, consumers must navigate the changing inventory landscape in light of the accelerated expiration.
